Brief Organization History and Mission
When HIV/AIDS infection was reported in Thailand in 1982, the
Camillian of Thailand was also alarmed about the situation and started to
discuss how the Order could address this tragic problem. The Order
agreed to put its hands on the issue. On behalf of the Order, Fr. Giovanni
Contarin, an Italian Camillian missionary priest, opened up a center to
help those infected with HIV/AIDS, called relief center in Soi Rawadee,
Nonthaburi Province, with the goal of reiteration giving
counseling/advice to those involved and infected with HIV/AIDS.
Soon Bantao Jai started working the year 1993. After a year, the people in local community nearby the center started to force us to stop the Center and leave out from the local community. They did not want the center to be near their residential area due to their lack of knowledge of the HIV/AIDS infection and their fear. In 1995, Soon Bantao Jai was raided by grenades and guns and moved to Rayong.
After the Camillian of Thailand had closed Soon Bantao Jai, the Camillian searched for a new place to restart the program. Eventually, the foundation committee decided to restart the program about HIV/AIDS in the land which was donated by a generous lady in Rayong province. From that time on, the people who were affected by and infected with HIV/AIDS had a place to live and continue their lives. It is like a house that they are able to reside in, like a family where they are able to find security and happiness. Camillian Social Center, Rayong which was officially opened in the year 1996 and since than several programs on HIV/AIDS were implemented.
The operation of HIV/AIDS activities under Camillian Social Center Rayong had been expanded phase by phase according to the nature of work and the implementation of different projects. At present there are 6 projects under the supervision of this Center. 1. Project of Home of orphaned children living HIV/AIDS with and affected by the virus. 2. Project of Independent Living Center for Youth affected by the virus. 3. Project of Scholarships for the children affected by AIDS. 4. Project of Palliative Care Unit for the poor and abandoned. 5.Project of Rehabilitation Center for HIV/AIDS patients (Garden of Eden) Homeless and living with disabilities. 6. 3. Description of the project requirement:
Camillian Social Center Rayong has been helping the orphaned children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS since 1999. These vulnerable children are orphaned because of AIDS. They have no one take care of them. It is related with the stigmatization in Thai society. These orphaned children can't live by themselves without the assistance of Camillian Social Center Rayong. Currently, CSC Rayong is taking care of 44 orphaned children living with and affected by AIDS.
CSC Rayong has been supporting these orphaned children to access the treatment of antiretroviral medicine and helping them to get reach the education, and also continually trying to organize various other necessary activities and programs for healing their life and improving their capacities, life skills and life’s quality, which it will prepare them to be ready to reintegrate into society in the future. With the medication, these children can have good health as normal children in society. With the education, these children can prepare themselves to grow up with the quality of life until they reach the time for reintegrating into normal society. With various life skill training programs, these children can able to live in society with stability, self-reliant, and real dignity of humanity.
In the process of caring for these children, we really need to have vans to taking children to school every day, taking children to hospital many days per week and taking the children outside for many activities and many different camps for their skills of lives. Currently, The Center has 2 vans but one old van has been already using for more than 16 years. The problems are that this van is becoming damaged and causes the center had to waste a lot of money for repairing and maintaining in each month. As the condition of this van tends to become more and more damaged, this causes us also to worry about the safety of the lives of our children to use this old van every day.
